User Equipment (UE) devices are now location aware. This is achieved via embedded GPS receivers and augmented with various aiding techniques (handset assisted, network assisted and hybrid) to form a position solution even when the GPS signal is unrecoverable.

Fourth Generation (4G) UE devices also host advanced operating systems that act as an interface between the specific hardware and the applications on the device. Many of these operating systems are Open Source, providing an Application Programming Interface (API) that exposes both terminal as well as network data to the user. One such software stack has been developed by a consortium of vendors called the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), and is known by the name "Android". Two popular alternative software stacks for 4G UE devices are Symbian and Windows Mobile. Tropper Technologies is developing mobile clients for each.

The coupling of advanced location aware hardware with Open Source APIs brings new power, ease of use and cost savings to the world of wireless test equipment. This is coupled with the advent of readily available geo-mapping tools such as Google Maps. Processing tools such as these can now be utilized to deliver both real-time as well as post-processing analysis capabilities to any computer equiped with an Internet Browser.
